![]() To connect to the IRC Network using the mIRC chat client follow these instructions for mIRC. Introduction to IRC Internet Relay Chat, more commonly known as IRC, is a chat medium which allows internet users to communicate in real time in topical "channels" or in user to user private discussion. There are many independent and private IRC "networks" which consist of one or more IRC "servers" connected together which host these live community discussions and their participants seamlessly. To connect to an IRC Server you need to run a software program often referred to as an IRC "client". Once this is installed, you must then connect via your client to an IRC server which will allow you to chat on the IRC network you wish to utilize. Below is a list of popular IRC Clients:
Connecting to IRC Chats Once your IRC client is installed and you have personalized it with your nickname and alternative nickname you will want to connect to a server in order to start chatting. Where you chat is completely up to you in general. If there is an IRC based Developer Chat announced for The Matrix Online, the news will almost always provide a specific server and channel name provided along with the date and time of the chat. The server and channel information are the location of where the Developer Chat will take place. An example of an IRC server name is: chat1.ign.com Once you have the server and channel information for the IRC location you wish to visit it is time to configure your IRC client software to use it. Using Server and Channel names with IRC Clients In the course of configuring your IRC client with personal nickname and identification information, you will often either be prompted for or see areas where you can add server and channel information. If you see boxes or buttons asking you to add new Servers or Channels, you can now add the information such as I gave you earlier in the above paragraph. If you do not see fields or links in which to add server or channel information you connect to your IRC server and channel via the chat prompt by typing the following commands (irc commands always start with a forward slash / as shown):
Once this is done you should be connected to the IRC server and able to chat in the IRC channel by typing into the channel's chat prompt.
